1 Product Overview

This Hardware User Guide will help you to become familiar with the EVK2 WAB and its interfaces. It also explains the different hardware features of the board. This guide only concerns the EVK2 WAB and therefore it does not explain how to assemble the hardware setup with the Telit EVK2 and Bluegiga carrier board. This is covered in the EVK2 WAB Getting Started Guide (Reference [1])

Connecting the Carrier Board
The picture below shows the correct orientation for connecting the carrier board to the EVK2 WAB.

3.3 UART

The diagram below shows how the Wireless Add-on Board routs UART signals between the Telit EVK2, Telit Interface board and Bluegiga modules. A variety of routing options are possible. The default configuration is number 4, where the Bluegiga module is connected to the Telit via UART. In the default configuration, the UART signals cannot be routed through the EVK2, so neither option 1 or 2 is possible. In the default configuration, either the BLE or the Telit module can be used as the host. The following UART signals are used: TX, RX, CTS, RTS. The Telit module’s DTR line can also be connected either to the EVK2 or to a GPIO pin on the Bluegiga module.

1Move jumpers to “USB” position on EVK2. This connects the external Type B USB port to a USB-to-UART converter on the EVK2. Communication with the Telit module or Bluegiga module will still be via UART internally, but connected to PC via USB connector.

4Move the UART switch to the “TE <–> BG” position (Default). In this position the RS232 and USB ports on the EVK2 board are not connected to anything and should be left unconnected. To connect a PC to the Telit module in this configuration, use the mini USB port on the Telit Interface board.
5Move the UART switch to the “EV <–> BG” position

Telit DTR line

The Telit module’s DTR line can be connected either to the EVK2 or to GPIO P1_6 of the Bluegiga module. This line can be used to put the Telit module into power saving mode. In the “TEL <-> BLE” position, the jumper connects the DTR line of the Telit module to the Bluegiga BLE module’s GPIO 1_6 pin. In the “TEL <-> EVK2” position the Telit module’s DTR line is connected to the EVK2 board’s UART, with can be accessed through the RS232 port. The jumper positions are shown below.

3.4 USB

The WAB features a mini USB connector which can be used to connect an external host directly to the Bluegiga module’s USB interface. This USB port can only be used as a host interface to the BLE module. It cannot be used to connect peripheral devices to the BLE module. The USB interface is supported by the following Bluegiga modules:

3.5 Bluegiga External Programmer

This connector allows the user to update the firmware on the Bluegiga module using an external programmer. The external programmer is not supplied with the WAB kit, since there are other methods available to update the Bluegiga module firmware. These include using the UART, USB or over the air. For examples on updating the Bluegiga module firmware please see the EVK2 WAB Software Guide (Reference [2]). The following external programming devices can be used with this kit:

  • The Texas Instruments CC Debugger available here: http://www.ti.com/tool/cc-debugger

Note: The programming connector is not shrouded, so there are two possible orientations in which the female connector of the programmer can be inserted. If your programmer does not pick up the Bluegiga module, try turning the connector around. This will not cause any damage to the parts.

4 Peripherals

4.1 Push Buttons

The board is fitted with 4 push buttons, which are connected to the Bluegiga carrier board as follows:

Button S2 is a dedicated reset button for the Bluegiga BLE module. Buttons S3, S4 and S5 are connected to GPIO pins on the BLE module and can be configured by the module firmware. The buttons are Normally Open and when pressed pull the respective GPIO pin low.

4.2 Potentiometer

Bluegiga BLE modules feature an onboard analog to digital converter (ADC). For specifications on the ADC please consult the relevant Bluegiga module datasheet. A potentiometer (R8) is connected to a simple OpAmp buffer to provide a variable input voltage to the ADC for testing. In order to use the potentiometer circuit, the switch labeled “POT” (S1) should be set to the “ON” position as shown below. The potentiometer is located in the top left corner of the board. It has a low accuracy and should not be used for applications where precise control of the ADC value is desired.

4.3 Temperature sensor

The EVK2 WAB has the following high accuracy temperature sensor connected to the BLE module I2C interface:

  • Microchip MCP9801-M/SN

This sensor can be used to exercise the I2C interface of the Bluegiga module. It can be used only with the following Bluegiga carrier boards

Telit
  • BLE113 carrier board
  • BLE113-256 carrier board
  • BLE121LR carrier board

The BLE112 carrier board can NOT use the temperature sensor. This is because the BLE112 module uses pins 23 and 25 of the carrier board for its I2C function. Pin 23 is used to control the Telit module DTR line on the EVK2 WAB. The other BLE carrier boards all use pins 4 and 6 of the carrier board for their I2C implementation.

4.4 Flash memory

A 2Mbit AMIC flash memory IC is connected to the SPI interface of the Bluegiga module. The purpose of this memory is to allow the user to perform over the air firmware updates to the Bluegiga module. The following flash memory part is used:

To use the flash memory, the switch labeled “EXT FLASH” should be set to the “ON” position as shown in the picture below.
